Cape Town - The compromise ‘hybrid model’ as suggested in the e-tolls panel review report is a cure worse than the disease, activist group Outa said on Monday.
The Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance said in a statement the suggestions contained in the hybrid funding proposals, if implemented, have significant unintended consequences and high costs to motorists.
"The biggest problem is the panel’s suggestion to hold onto the ill-conceived and failed e-toll scheme, as a major funding mechanism."
Outa said even though the suggestion of a national funding model falls outside of the panel's jurisdiction, it has downplayed the suggestion of full funding from the national fiscus and / or the fuel levy.
Last year, Gauteng Premier David Makhura established a review panel to assess the socio-economic impact of e-tolling following calls for it to be scrapped.
The e-tolls system has received widespread opposition, including several several court challenges to halt the project, since it was implemented on Gauteng highways in December 2013.
