Dlamini: Cosatu must still read Numsa letter

Johannesburg - Trade union Numsa has sent a letter to Cosatu responding to the outcome of its central executive committee (CEC) meeting, the trade union federation said on Friday.

"I am told there is a letter from Numsa in response to the CEC outcome," Cosatu president Sidumo Dlamini said on the sidelines of a Nehawu special congress in Johannesburg.

"I haven't read that letter or opened it. We are going to meet as office bearers and discuss that letter," he said.

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa was scheduled to address National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) members in the afternoon.

The Congress of SA Trade Unions' CEC held its meeting a week ago amid factionalism in the country's biggest trade union federation.

The National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa), and seven other unions, lodged a court challenge after Cosatu denied their request to hold a special national congress.

The unions want to elect a new Cosatu leadership.

Numsa and Cosatu have been at loggerheads since Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi was suspended. He was reinstated following a court hearing.

At a press conference following the CEC meeting, Cosatu said Numsa had committed itself to the resolutions taken at the CEC.
