Johannesburg - Wine distiller Distell will export 500 wine cuttings to Tanzania as part of a viticultural initiative to boost the country's wine industry.

"The cuttings are from a new variety of wine called Villard Blanc. Not only does this plant produce a lot of crops, it is also resistant to diseases," said Distell's chief viticulturist Dirk Bosman. He said African farmers sometimes do not have the resources to fight plant diseases.

In a joint-venture with Tanzania Distilleries Limited that began two years ago, Distell gives advice on how to improve vineyard production, quality and yield. The project aims to see farmers in the Dodoma region double their crops within three to five years.

Bosman said while Distell is still exporting wine to Tanzania, the country has a lot of potential to increase its wine production.

"Africa is the natural market for South African Wine but still very underdeveloped," said CEO of Wines of South Africa Su Birch.

"If we can grow production and consumption in Africa, it will prove very profitable and will increase exports," said Birch.

Bosman said once the training model and its execution has been refined, the group will consider to introduce similar initiatives in other African countries.
