Johannesburg - The
number of civil judgments for debt decreased 36.3% year-on-year (y/y) in
April. This followed a 22.1% y/y decrease in March, data from Statistics SA
(Stats SA) showed on Wednesday.
In April 38 000 civil judgments for debt amounting to R383m
were recorded. The largest contributors were money lent at R128.7m, goods sold
at R65.4m, and services at R62.7m. Judgments for other debts were put at R59.7m.
For the three months ended April, the number of civil
judgments decreased by 27.8% compared with the three months ended April 2010.
Stats SA reported that the main drivers behind the 27.8%
drop were civil judgments relating to the money lent category, which
contributed -13.8 percentage points, the promissory notes and other
acknowledgements of debt category, contributing -5.7 percentage points, and the
services category, which contributed 5.3 percentage points.
A y/y fall of 25.8% was recorded in April to
R383m.
In addition, the number of civil summonses issued for debt
fell 25.1% y/y in April and by 16.6% for the three months ending in April.
Contributors to the 16.6% decrease were the money lent category, the goods sold category, the other debts category and the services category.
