DTI approves R157m in grants

Johannesburg - The department of trade and industry has approved R157m in grants under its business process outsourcing incentive scheme, its minister Rob Davies said on Wednesday.

This would result in the creation of 11 000 jobs, he said in a written reply in parliament.

"The incentives will be utilised to offset expenditure in order to make applicants more globally competitive, when servicing offshore clients out of South Africa," he said.

The grants would be disbursed to 10 projects over the next three years.

"The grants cover only a portion of the operational costs related to the project," Davies said.

"Disbursements are not made upfront, but are paid only after confirmation that jobs have been created."

The jobs created by the beneficiaries had to be in place for at least three years.

Old Mutual Assurance, Amicorp South Africa, Amazon Development Centre First Call Centre Solutions and Call Centre International would receive the grants.
