DA urges labour bill amendments

Cape Town - The Democratic Alliance will propose urgent amendments to the labour relations amendment Bill in a bid to reopen debate on provisions that appear to be concessions to Cosatu, it said on Wednesday.

The DA is calling for a provision on strike balloting to be retained and for labour broking to be regulated rather than banned, as in the final version of the bill adopted by Parliament's portfolio committee on labour on Tuesday.

DA labour spokesperson Sej Motau said the ruling party had bowed to pressure from formal ally the Congress of SA Trade Unions, and missed an opportunity to overhaul labour relations and stimulate economic growth.

"The ANC's alliance with Cosatu has compromised its ability to find solutions to the crisis," he said.

The bill is due to be debated in the National Assembly on Thursday. Under parliamentary rules, MPs must vote on the proposed amendments in the Assembly or refer them back to the portfolio committee for discussion.
