DA hits out at Sanral's secrecy application

Johannesburg - The DA will picket outside Cape Town's high court on Monday in protest over Sanral's application to keep secret certain tolling documentation.

"If Sanral is successful in their application, they will be allowed to keep details of the proposed tolling of the N1 and N2 highways confidential," said the opposition party in a statement issued on Sunday.

"This would include information on what the tariffs will be, the cost of the project and the percentage of revenue that the operator will receive."

On Monday, a closed court is to consider an application by the SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) that supplementary papers on the proposed N1/N2 Winelands Toll Highway Project not be put on public record.

The DA said its picket - scheduled to start at 10:00 - was in solidarity with the City of Cape Town's opposition to the application.

"As long as the DA governs the Western Cape, we will not allow tolling of any kind to take place on our province’s highways."

A legal battle is currently underway between Sanral and the City of Cape Town over the proposed N1/N2 Winelands Toll Highway Project.

In May last year, the municipality was granted an interim interdict to halt the project.

The interdict remains in force until the finalisation of the City's application to have Sanral's declaration of the project and the selection of the preferred bidder, Protea Parkways Consortium (PPC), be reviewed and set aside.

Sanral and PPC now want the matter to be heard in a closed court and to have related court documents kept out of the public domain.
