DA, EFF to make e-toll submissions

Johannesburg - The DA and EFF will make their submissions to the E-tolls Advisory Panel on Thursday on their views on e-tolling in Gauteng.

The hearings start at 09:00 in the Gauteng Legislature.

Gauteng premier David Makhura established the panel on July 17 to assess the social and economic impact of e-tolls.

The review panel is intended to examine the economic and social impact of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project and the electronic tolling system set up to fund it. It is expected to present its findings to Makhura at the end of November.

On October 2, the Democratic Alliance marched against tolling in Pretoria.

DA parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane said the party wanted e-tolls to be put on hold until the panel had completed its work and tabled its finding.

Maimane said the ANC-led government was not listening to the will of the people and proposed a fuel levy as an alternative to e-tolls as it would cost less.

Before e-tolls were implemented, the Economic Freedom Fighters said tolls would rob Gauteng residents of their hard-earned money.

The EFF called on citizens, civil society and anyone opposed to e-tolling to reject the system.
