Cosatu postpones train fare strike

Johannesburg - Cosatu in the Western Cape has postponed its strike against Metrorail hiking its fares, the trade union federation said on Monday.

"The Cosatu strike against Metrorail for the bad state of trains and fare increases will no longer take place on June 24," the Congress of SA Trade Unions' provincial secretary Tony Ehrenreich said in a statement.

The National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) had not issued a strike certificate.

"The strike is delayed upon a request from Nedlac, which has not yet issued the strike certificate for a legally protected strike," Ehrenreich said.

Nedlac was asked to facilitate talks between Cosatu and the transport ministry on the reasons for the strike.

Ehrenreich said the fare increases would impose an extra burden on commuters.

According to Metrorail, the price of train tickets would increase on July 1.

"The cost of single tickets increases by 50 cents, return tickets by R1. Weekly ticket increases range between R3 and R7, while monthly tickets increase between R7 and R30," Metrorail said in a statement on its website.
