Cosatu faces financial squeeze over legal battles

Johannesburg - The Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) is battling financially as a result of legal action, its president Sidumo Dlamini said on Thursday.

"This is because a large portion of the money is used defending itself in court," he said at the SA Democratic Teachers' Union congress in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg.

"Lawyers are expensive."

He said it should not be the courts that resolved union problems.

"If you are not happy with a decision... No, don't go to court," said Dlamini.

"We cannot have the courts solving our problems of our organisations. It's not just Cosatu, it's lots of our organisations [that are taken to court]."

Dlamini said Cosatu was under severe attack.

"Nobody can take away anybody's rights. We must respect internal processes.

"There's no other reason for members to pay subscriptions. It's purely for the service of members who face daily challenges at workplaces.

"When an organisation is taken to court by its member, that organisation must use the money."
