Johannesburg - Labour federation Cosatu has said it will protest if Walmart's R16.5bn bid for Massmart Holdings [JSE:MSM] is approved without conditions.
The Competition Tribunal is currently hearing testimony to decide whether to allow Walmart to buy 51% of the local discount retailer.
The government and unions are concerned the deal would lead to a flood of cheap imports from Asia, leading to job cuts and squeezing local suppliers.
Cosatu said in a statement on Friday that if the merger is approved, competition authorities should "impose strict conditions" on it.
The union said it would mobilise its members for marches, demonstations, boycotts and pickets if the deal is approved without conditions.
