Johannesburg - The Congress of SA Trade Unions supports bus drivers' demand for higher wages, it said on Tuesday.
"We are fully behind workers' demands as they are reasonable... The employer is drunk with profits that we make every day and treats our demands as unreasonable," said Cosatu Gauteng secretary Dumisani Dakile.
He was addressing SA Transport and Allied Workers' Union (Satawu) members who gathered at Peter Roos Park in Johannesburg to march in demand for higher wages for bus drivers.
Bus drivers have been on strike countrywide for three weeks, demanding a 13% wage increase and allowances for housing, night shift and long-distance trips.
Talks between the unions and employers at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration are expected to resume this week.
The marchers handed over a memorandum to the SA Police Service, represented by Gauteng acting deputy commissioner Major General Tirhani Maswanganyi.
They demanded that police help curb gender-based violence by arresting perpetrators. They also demanded the arrests of those who had torched shop stewards' homes.
Satawu Gauteng general secretary Chris Nkosi said memorandums would also be handed over to the road freight bargaining council, and to the private security sector provident fund.
