Johannesburg - Cleaning at old age homes, private hospitals and shopping centres will stop on Monday as contract workers go on strike, two unions said.
All cleaning workers, except those in KwaZulu-Natal, would embark on an indefinite strike to protest against "super exploitation" in the industry, the Professional Transport and Allied Workers' Union and the Hotel, Liquor, Catering, Commercial and Allied Workers' Union said in a joint statement on Sunday.
Government institutions would also be affected.
The unions were opposed to labour brokering, as it meant some workers were not protected by certain labour legislation.
The unions' demands include a basic salary of R4 200 per month, a yearly 13th cheque and an eight-hour working day.
According to the statement the National Contract Cleaning Association (NCCA) was offering between six and 6.5% increases, depending on the employee's level. It also offered a 13th cheque for the end of next year.
The NCCA was not immediately available for comment.
