Cape Town - Municipalities around the country are owed
almost R62bn, acting Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister
Nathi Mthethwa said on Monday.
In a question for a written reply in the National Council of
Provinces, Mthethwa was asked by the Democratic Alliance's Alf Lees whether the
national municipal revenue enhancement programme had been finalised.
Mthethwa replied that due to the complexity of obtaining
accurate information from municipalities, the national revenue enhancement
programme targets had not been met.
"This programme will be a priority in 2011/12," he
said.
An immediate task in the new financial year would be to
survey all municipalities to establish the scope of debt and revenue chain
problems.
"Based on the Quarter Two Section 71 report as
published by the National Treasury, the total debt owed to municipalities
amounts to R61.98bn."
Mthethwa pledged to provide a detailed breakdown once the amounts had been verified.
