Johannesburg - Competitions Commission boss Shan Ramburuth has landed himself in hot water after it emerged he has spent thousands of rands of taxpayers' money on porn sites.
According to the Sunday Times, Ramburuth, who played a key role in major mergers in South Africa, including Walmart and Massmart, spent R123 000 on porn sites while overseas in October 2011. A forensic report by Paul O’Sullivan and Associates, that was handed to Economic Development Minister Ebrahim Patel, states that Ramburuth visited 25 pornographic sites between August and November 2011 – at the expense of the commission. In July 2012, the commission paid a R104 000 bill for the same SIM card.
According to Patel’s spokesperson Manelisi Wolela, Ramburuth has resigned, with effect from Mondy and that an acting commissioner would be appointed this week.
The Africa Report meanwhile puts Ramburuth as one of the 50 most influential people in Africa. Not only did he play a key role in the Wallmart and Massmart mergers but he also headed the investigations into the anti-competitive practises in the construction sector. However, there have been complaints about Ramburuth’s leadership style for over a year now – complaints that finally led to a forensic investigation.
