The gas-fired power station would be rolled out in three phases with phase one contributing 800 Megawatts of electricity to the national grid.
"This is expected to come on stream in early 2011," the CDC said.
Preliminary studies showed that further phases of the project would entail expansion to 1600MW, 2400MW and possibly in phase three up to 3200MW by late 2012.
Earlier this year, the CDC and the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM), among others, reactivated a feasibility study to fast-track a gas-fired power station to meet investor demand, diversify energy sources, ensure security of energy supplies and restore investor confidence.
"The project is a culmination of almost six months of consultation with various players to partner with the CDC and the NMBM in seeing the project being brought to finality," the CDC said.
It said it had called for proposals from transaction advisers to assist in the construction and operation of the power station.
