Cape Town - The Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI), part of former US president Bill Clinton's Clinton Foundation, will help South Africa generate more solar power.

On Thursday, a memorandum of understanding was signed by energy minister Dipuo Peters and CCI representatives to investigate the establishment of a "solar park" where independent power producers can demonstrate their technologies.

A viability study would be undertaken to find the most suitable South African sites.

The CCI is endeavouring to promote renewable energy in developing countries so that less greenhouse gas is released by the burning of fossil fuels such as coal.

The US has experience in erecting and operating large-scale thermal solar-power projects.

The CCI is currently assisting Australia, India and the south-western US with similar projects.

Eskom's plans for a 100MW thermal solar-power plant near Upington were suspended at the beginning of this year because of a lack of funds, but Eskom's Dr Steve Lennon recently said that the project could possibly be resumed in 2010 if the World Bank's Clean Technology Fund provides finance.
