Gautengers top tax table

Cape Town - Close to half of South Africa's taxable personal income is earned by Gauteng residents, according to the 2013 Tax Statistics, released by the SA Revenue Service on Monday.

The document shows individual taxpayers in the province earned 46.5% (R475.8bn) of the country's total R1 trillion aggregated taxable income in the 2012 tax year.

According to Stats SA's mid-year population estimates, Gauteng is home to just under a quarter of the country's population - 12.7 million people.

In comparison, South Africa's second most populous province, KwaZulu-Natal - with 10.5 million inhabitants - generates 13.9% of the taxable income.

The Eastern Cape, with an estimated 6.6 million people, is home to just under 395 000 assessed individual taxpayers. The province generated almost R66bn in taxable income.

The Northern Cape, the least populated province, has 87 908 individual taxpayers.

The Western Cape's 793 187 assessed individual taxpayers earned more than R149bn in taxable income last year, 14.6% of the total.
