Johannesburg - Johannesburg residents whose electricity meters are inaccessible to meter readers could have their electricity cut off, City Power said on Thursday.
"We recognise that many customers may not be available to grant access to their properties when our meter readers visit their areas," spokesperson Sol Masolo said in a statement.
City Power was entitled to disconnect customers' electricity supply if meter readers were unable to access the meters on two or more occasions.
This was according to the Electricity Regulation Act, the Local Government Municipal Systems Act, and Johannesburg's metropolitan electricity by-laws, he said.
"To assist customers in making appointments, we have established a meter reading call centre, an sms line, and a dedicated e-mail address. Our meter readers are available after hours and on weekends."
Where meter readers were repeatedly unable to read a particular meter, a notice would be left at the premises asking the customer to contact City Power within 48-hours to avoid disconnection.
"Should customers not contact City Power within 48-hours, as stipulated in the notice, electricity may be disconnected without further notice," Masolo said.
Customers would then have to pay a reconnection fee.
