City Power refutes overcharging claims

Cape Town - The City of Johannesburg has denied reports of overcharging consumers for electricity, reported eNCA on Friday.

The City of Johannesburg settled for a lower increase in electricity tariffs than it originally applied for.

The National Energy Regulator approved a 7% price hike for City Power but the municipality wanted a 15% increase.

"Even though the city was not granted the tariff increase it applied for... the city intends complying fully with the Nersa decision," City spokesperson Nthatisi Madingoane said on Wednesday.

"In line with the 2013/14 tariffs, the demand side management levy has been reduced from 2c/kWh to 1c/kWh to alleviate the burden on the customers," he added.

However, reports stated that consumers were being overcharged.

"Customers are actually not paying 15.4%," City Power's managing director Sicelo Xulu told the broadcaster on Friday.

"Customers from July 1 are paying an increase of 7% on average,"

"We have never charged customers 15.4%," he said.

Xulu  assured customers that they will see in their bill a 7% impact only.
