Cellphones bridging the digital divide

Johannesburg - Seven out of 10 South Africans are using their cellphones to log on to the internet.

Using a cellphone, rather than the country’s poor fixed-line infrastructure, is the preferred method of connection by many, a report titled The New Wate, by the SA Network Survey, has found.

With the high costs of using the internet, the survey has found that most people want to make use of cheap and powerful ways of communicating to maintain their social relationships.

They also want to use the internet to learn and need it in their work or business, and want to use it to improve their prospects.

The survey revealed several other digital divides. These included how often users connect, what they do online, and who is and is not connected at all.

The five top reasons for connecting to the internet, the survey found, were:To get information;
  • To socialise;
  • To study
  • Work/business; and
  • To look for a job.
The study was done by the SA Network Society, a project of Wits Journalism, in collaboration with Research ICT Africa.
