Johannesburg - Sales of new vehicles ended 2010 on a high. The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) on Monday reported a 29.6% increase in vehicle sales in December compared to December 2009.
Naamsa said 39 504 units were sold in December 2010 compared to 30 407 the previous December.
The spike was attributed to a boost in new car sales which increased by 38.9% year on year (y/y).
"New vehicle sales reflect an encouraging and impressive performance across all sectors, particularly the new car segment," said Naamsa.
Exports also increased substantially with 22 148 vehicles sold, reflecting an improvement of 5 802 vehicles or 35.5% y/y.
Naamsa cautioned that the figures be seen against the "depressed" levels of 2009 during the global financial crisis.
While in 2010 vehicles sales increased significantly, they were still well below those of 2005 to 2008, it said.
