Cape Town - Western Cape farmers are reaching out to their counterparts who are battling to keep their livestock alive due to drought.
Provincial MEC for agriculture MEC Gerrit van Rensburg said on Tuesday that Western Cape farmers will donate animal feed to drought-stricken areas in the Northern Cape and North West.
He said provincial farmers had experienced good harvests in the past few years and wanted to help out in areas where farmers were battling to keep their livestock alive.
"We have an abundance of hay to donate, but transporting it in large quantities has been the problem," he said.
Transnet had made a train available to collect feed donations from towns such as Swellendam, Caledon, Malmesbury and Porterville.
It would then transport the feed at no cost to the areas in need.
Van Rensburg invited farmers and farmer organisations to become involved.
"We want to finalise the logistics in January, and hopefully aid will arrive late January in the two provinces."
