Cabinet approves fishing treaties

Pretoria - Cabinet has approved three international agreements aimed at preserving certain fish species and preventing illegal and unregulated fishing.

The approval means they will now come before Parliament for assent, acting government spokesperson Phumla Williams told journalists in Pretoria on Monday, following the executive's fortnightly meeting last week.

She said the treaties included:

  • The agreement for the establishment of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission;
  • The Convention for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna; and,
  • The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations' Port State Measures Agreement to Prevent, Deter, and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing.

"Cabinet has approved [these] to be assented to [in] Parliament in terms of section 231 of the Constitution," Williams said.
