Cape Town - The City of Cape Town's electricity tariffs will rise by a quarter this week, the municipality said on Tuesday.
The hike, effective from July 1, was the result of Eskom's 29% increase in bulk tariffs to the city.
The Eskom increase, together with spending on the electricity network, meant the city had to raise its tariffs by an average of 24.6% for the coming financial year.
This would not affect those parts of the city that fell in Eskom distribution areas and where Eskom increases were implemented in April.
Meanwhile, electricity tariffs in the Mangaung local municipality, which includes Bloemfontein, Thaba Nchu and Botshabelo, will increase by 28.9%, mayor Playfair Morule announced on Tuesday.
Residents also faced increases of 23% in general tariffs and charges and 15% in water tariffs. All these would kick in on July 1.
Delivering the municipality's budget in the city, Morule said the new tariff structure took into recognition the fact that Mangaung was becoming a metropolitan municipality.
He said the increments had to be understood in the line with the vision of a "globally safe and attractive municipality to live, work and invest in".
