Cape Town - The Companies and Intellectual Property
Commission (CIPC) significantly reduced its transaction backlog from 50 000
in the middle of July to around 6 700 by the end of August, MPs heard on
Wednesday.
According to a report given to the portfolio committee on
trade and industry, the progress was made after operational hours were extended
at CIPC offices and incentive schemes were introduced.
"The DA welcomes the turnaround at the companies
commission and commends the minister and the companies commissioner, Ms Astrid
Ludin, for the reduction in the transaction backlog" said Democratic
Alliance MP Tim Harris.
According to the report, there were 6 712 outstanding
transactions at the end of August, down from 249 599 at the end of August 2008.
Harris said the commission had solved problems in the call
centre by outsourcing it and by introducing service level agreements.
"These interventions will to help us get to the
position where we can analyse the speed of business registrations against
competitor countries, rather than the size of our registration backlogs,"
he said.
Ludin has committed to outsourcing the call centre by
December, but it is 22 agents short of its ideal staff component. The number of
vacancies in the commission has increased from 46 in July to 56 in August.
