Business confidence edges up

Johannesburg - Business confidence in South Africa edged up to 91.4 in September from 90.5 in August, a business survey showed on Thursday, although ongoing labour disputes remain a drag on the economy.

The latest reading is still down 0.3 index points from the same month last year, and well below the 100 mark for the current base year 2010, the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sacci) said in a statement.

"The relatively low level of business confidence in South Africa needs a sustained continuation of the September 2013 BCI (business confidence index) improvement," Sacci said, cautioning the government against yielding to the temptation to sway from economy-friendly policies ahead of elections next year.
