London - Britain's unemployment rate fell to 6% in the third quarter, reaching its lowest level in eight years, official figures released on Wednesday showed.
There were 1.97 million unemployed in the June-August period, 154 000 fewer than for the second quarter and 538 000 fewer than compared to the corresponding period a year earlier.
"This is the largest annual fall in unemployment on record," the Office for National Statistics stated in a release.
Almost three quarters of those aged 16 to 64 had a job, up from 71% a year earlier.
Prime Minister David Cameron said on Twitter that the year-on-year rate was the "biggest-ever fall in unemployment in history."
Employment Minister Esther McVey told the BBC there were "a host of job opportunities out there" and that Britain had the fastest-growing big economy in the rich world.
