Johannesburg - World soccer body Fifa should boycott all clothing produced by
sweatshop labour for 2010 World Cup festivities, unions in the
construction and textile industries said on Wednesday.
Steve Grinter, of the International Textile and Garment Leather
Workers' Federation (ITGLWF), told a conference in Johannesburg on
Wednesday that Fifa and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) must
disclose where all 2010 clothing originated from.
He warned that South African clothing producers would find it
difficult next year to compete with suppliers from abroad who "pay
workers peanuts and violate their basic trade union rights".
Grinter was addressing a multi-sectoral conference on decent
work during the World Cup.
The unions attending the conference said in a joint statement
they hoped Fifa and the LOC would adhere to an agreement with the
South African Clothing Textile Workers Union, in which it was
guaranteed that all producers of Fifa branded sportswear would be
members of the clothing industry bargaining council.
