Beat the rush for e-tags - Sanral

Johannesburg - Gauteng drivers should register for e-tags now to avoid the rush when e-tolling begins, the SA National Roads Agency (Sanral) said on Tuesday.

"To avoid a last-minute rush of motorists getting e-tags ahead of toll commencement, we are encouraging motorists to register and obtain their e-tags," spokesperson Vusi Mona said in a statement.

Those who had tags fitted to their vehicles would receive built-in discounts of up to 48%.

On Monday, Sanral CEO Nazir Ali said 600 000 e-toll tags were in circulation.

Last month, President Jacob Zuma signed into law the Transport Laws and Related Matters Amendment Bill, giving Sanral the nod to start e-tolling on Gauteng's freeways.

On Friday, the SABC reported that government intended to publicise the proposed e-toll tariffs this week, with a view to implementing them by the end of November.

The Supreme Court of Appeal reserved judgment last month on a legal challenge to e-tolls by lobby group Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance.

Mona said it was quick and simple to register for an e-tag. Motorists could do so at Sanral outlets and participating Checkers, CNA, Pick 'n Pay, Shoprite, or Spar shops, on www.sanral.co.za, by phone, or fax.
