Abuja - Banks in Nigeria have been urged to fund infrastructural development in Africa so the continent can stop depending on the West.
The call was made by President Goodluck Jonathan following a meeting with Ecobank Transnational Group Chief Executive Officer, Thierry Tanoh, at the State House in Abuja.
"We need banks that can fund infrastructural development in Africa. For instance, we should not go to Europe before turning to neighbouring countries," Jonathan said.
He said the continent’s private sector should play a more robust role to speed up the development of the continent.
Tanoh was in Abuja to pledge support from Nigeria to the planned Lagos to Abidjan highway construction aimed at improving transport between Nigeria and Ivory Coast.
Ecobank is a Pan African bank doing business in more than 40 African countries.
