Cape Town - British Airways (BA) says the airline has definitely not increased its fares exorbitantly for the 2010 Fifa World Cup soccer tournament in South Africa.
Sue Botes, BA's commercial manager in South Africa, says the airline is charging normal high season tariffs for air tickets during the tournament.
Botes says the airline still expects a difficult and competitive year in the outbound air-travel market (passengers flying from South Africa to Britain). Inbound bookings rose sharply once England qualified for the world cup.
In South Africa, the number of business travellers declined during the recession.
BA had received approval to increase its flights between Johannesburg and London to 19 a week, but eventually had to return to 14 flights because of the downturn.
Flights out of Cape Town for the summer holiday season have been increased to 13 a week. There are normally 14 a week in the summer, but one flight is being utilised for BA's new route between London and Luanda in Angola.
