Johannesburg – Cape Town is now the favourite destination for British Airlines (BA) passengers worldwide, and the airline is starting a new daily flight to Cape Town as from November.

BA says its new Boeing 777 will be introduced for the route.

Sue Botes, BA’s commercial manager in South Africa, says demand for flights to Cape Town was on the rise even before the 2010 FIFA World Cup soccer tournament.

Passengers throughout the world who fly BA have identified Cape Town as their favourite destination.

Botes says the airline is accommodating the increasing demand by offering additional flights.

From November onwards BA will have two daily flights to Cape Town, compared with the current single one.

The second daily flight will be just in time for the South African summer, Botes said on Tuesday.

She said reservations for flights to Cape Town and Johannesburg look good and she reckons South Africa is one of BA’s most profitable routes.

Over the past two years BA has been severely impacted by a downturn in the airline business. More than 2 000 jobs have been shed worldwide.

One of the two daily flights to Cape Town from November will be on BA’s new Boeing 777.

@ "MOTALA" : I can understand the mis-spelling of "Kirstanbosch", but "Khayalicha" (sic) ? You're obviously not from C.T. Q : Who runs KZN ? Go, Helen, you're doing all W.C. citizens proud.

Ben Jul 28 2010 16:44
CT is a success cause people running the province here works for a living. They don't sit at home collecting salaries or stealing money. @Motala. Dont you guys have any poor people working for rich people where you're from? And last I check Gugulethu voted in May this year 60% in favor of the DA. 40% up since 2006. And the ANC 37.7%. 53% DOWN since 2006. People is learning... You vote for the party that delivers...not by the colour of their skin.

Richard Jul 28 2010 16:02
This isn't exactly news. BA operate 2 daily flights every year over our summer...

Nek Snegdirb Jul 28 2010 15:52
I fly SAA to Heathrow once a year for the summer. Have always been very impressed with the friendliness and efficiency of the air crew and flight crews. Hopefully they will upgrade the airbusses shortly as they are now outdated and lack in flight entertainment. I will never fly BA. My default carrier is definitely Virgin. Very funky and customer orientated. BA should keep their service operation and sell their planes to Emirates and Virgin.

Don & Motala you damn twits...!!!! What on earth does this article have to do with racism?? Idiots. And since you now wish to make this a race issue, maybe it is because the DA runs it........... Well done Helen Zille, well done.

Robert Jul 28 2010 13:44
I was wondering how long it would take to turn a positive story like this into a racial slanging match....

Bfn Jul 28 2010 12:48
Crap! There goes our chance for Bloemfontein again!!lol

Toolman Jul 28 2010 12:27
It seems like a lot of people are running Cape Town down as a racist city or the Europe of Africa because the DA runs it. Perhaps these egotistical idiots dont like the fact that at least one of the provinces in theis glorious country is actually working properly because the ANC isnt running it. That is why people want to visit Cape Town. It is run properly. Why do you think the people voted for the DA. They were sick and tired on non delivery by the ruling party. All those with the negative comments are the actual racists in this country who dont want to see things work.

@ Motala Jul 28 2010 12:18
Well done to the Great Helen Zille...the mother Teresa of SA.

Jo Jul 28 2010 12:08
@motala: you conveniently forget the majority of working- and middle class people who form the backbone of our economy. people with a couple of centuries' worth of heritage here who do not, in fact, violently turn on the hundreds of thousand of settlers who stream into CT each year from the Eastern Cape. It is funny how the Congolese and Somalians arrive here with the clothes on their backs and a year later, through hard work and no sense of entitlement, are able to feed their families and boost our economy. I also sometimes look at rich people in anger, but they really are the smallest minority and we do need them as part of the bigger picture. By claiming that CT consists solely of Camps Bay and Gugs and nothing in between... well that's just ridiculous... I will never make light of our tragic past and can see the legacy of institutionalised racism and oppression everyday still, but come on, it's time we became pragmatic and left the empty firebrand rhetoric at the door.

@Allister Jul 28 2010 10:52
The Airbuses used by SAA on long hauls are newer than the older 747 generartions used by BA. Get the facts straight.

Don Jul 28 2010 10:43
Cape town is the most Racist City in South Africa.

Motala Jul 28 2010 10:38
CT is the Europe of Africa. For the rich & famous, whilst the DA has it's way. The economic slaves live in Khayalicha, Gugulethu etc. Commute to Camps Bay, Kirstanbosch etc daily, then back to their steel shacks in mud.

Allister Jul 28 2010 10:37
BA currently uses the fuel guzzling 747 on this route yet they are able to declare this a profitable route. SAA, on the other hand, cannot be bothered that they have been pipped (in their own back yard) by a foreign carrier and continue to use their aged Airbus 200 aircraft which has no decent entertainment options on board. The price diff is also in in BA's favor but I thnk it's eventually the service levels, from ticketing right up to on-board, that will make me choose BA over SAA anyway.

motala Jul 28 2010 10:34
Very good. Now HOW IS DURBS GONNA ENTICE BA TO @ LEAST 1 EMPTY FLIGHT A WEEK TO DURBS OR FLY CARGO FLIGHTS TO DURBS. U C, I told u, Shaka Airport is a white Elephant. We are no where near Ctown when it comes to hospitality. Durbs can only cater for our cheap local croud. Fact!

uys Jul 28 2010 10:07
Do you guys offer a special ie on full business class fare is there a first class upgrade one way?? thanks I could just change from our poor SAA service?

sacha Jul 28 2010 10:03
They would get alot more business if the U.K didnt need a transit visa for London. If you want to buy a British Airways ticket to another point in Europe you need to pay an extra R 800.00 to sit in transit at Heathrow airport! Add that onto the price of a ticket and there are other airlines that are alot cheaper, not to mention their constantly striking staff.

Welcome to Cape Town, the most beatiful place on earth, its a world in one city, with unique beaty seen no where else in the world. Even winter is stunning these days. It the best of Europe with an African touch.

Flyer Jul 28 2010 09:45
Will anyone actually be able to get to Cape Town with all the strikes that BA are having?? Looks like they have adopted some of our local strike culture!! Viva!, bring the Brits and all their Pounds because we won't go there with their visa charges!

Patriot Jul 28 2010 09:45
Are they actual tourists or, ex-pats comming to visit family, there are after all a few hundred thousand south Africans working in the UK

Dean Jul 28 2010 09:43
Not surprising at all - I recently returned to live in CT with my family, after a decade in th Uk,Oz,Europe and the States. No city compares to Cape Town (and surrounds) - it is frankly astounding the energy, the beauty, the range of options. And for everyone, from the little kids to the partying adults. I have made only a few good, big, decisions in my life - but coming home to SA is the best thing I have done.

James Jul 28 2010 09:31
Naturally it would be BA's most profitably route when you are competing against the national inefficient carrier who wipes out low cost competition (read Nationwide) and charges the earth. Virgin and all the rest have climbed on the band wagon as well.
