Perth - The vibrant Western Australian economy continues to drain off skilled and valuable South Africans, a Sapa correspondent reported on Monday.

There had been an increase in the number of doctors, nurses, accountants and skilled farming and horticultural personnel entering the country in 2004-2005.

Although the British constitute by far the biggest number of migrants (5 675) entering West Australia, South Africa came fourth with 887, ahead of China and India.

There was also evidence of Australia increasingly looking to South Africa for specialist workers.

Austal had attracted seven skilled South Africans, and was also looking to Croatia.
