Another whopping petrol price hike

Johannesburg - The price of all grades of petrol will rise by 26c per litre next week, the department of energy said on Friday.

This brings the price of a litre of 95 octane in Gauteng to R8.99 and R8.75 at the coast.

Diesel will cost between 30c and 32c more, bringing it to R8.14/l in Gauteng and R8/l at the coast.

Illuminating paraffin will cost between 32c and 42c more and LP gas 41c.

The hike is the second large one in a row, in spite of the relative strength of the rand.

The deparment blamed the increases on higher international prices for petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin.

It also said that the rand had weakened against the dollar in the past month.

The average exchange rate had been R6.89/$, compared to R6.90/$ in the previous period.
