Johannesburg - the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said on Tuesday that two workers died at Anglo Platinum's mines, but the
world's top platinum producer said it had not shut its operations after the incidents.
South Africa, the world's top source of platinum and a major gold producer, has an appalling underground safety record. The government has routinely shut down operations temporarily after deaths so that companies can probe mine safety or make repairs.
"On Saturday, a mineworker died at Mogalakwena mine outside Mokopane while another mineworker lost his life at another Angloplatinum operation at Amandelbult," Lesiba Seshoka, a spokesperson for NUM said in a statement.
Angloplat's spokesperson Simon Tebele confirmed the incidents. He said the death at Amendelbult took place on Monday, and that investigations were ongoing, but the mines were still running.
South Africa's mines' sector recorded 221 mine deaths last year, up from 200 in 2006, prompting a strike by an angry NUM, a national safety audit of mines and a review of mine safety laws.
