Amcu, platinum companies arrive for talks

Pretoria - Leaders of Amcu and platinum producers arrived at the Southern Sun Hotel in Pretoria on Monday for talks aimed at resolving a strike in the platinum sector.

Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) spokesperson Lusanda Myoli confirmed that the parties had arrived ahead of the mediation process, which is scheduled to run until Wednesday.

Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) workers went on strike at Impala Platinum, Lonmin and Anglo American Platinum mines on Thursday.

The union is demanding R12 500 per month for entry-level workers, but the platinum companies have said this would not be affordable.

The CCMA process began in Johannesburg on Friday, with input from Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant and Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu.

Oliphant's spokesperson, Musa Zondi, said on Friday that the ministers would not be present at the talks this week.
