Polokwane - The Limpopo Department of Agriculture has so far donated R160m towards the development of the Tshivase tea plantation outside Thohoyandou.
The department head, Bigman Maloa, said the plantation is already cultivating tea and will receive further monetary assistance from the department, although he could not say how much.
This success contrasts sharply with the fate of the now defunct Sapekoe tea plantation in Magoebaskloof, outside Tzaneen, also in Limpopo.
About four years ago this formally thriving tea plantation was handed over to the Makgobo tribe as part of a land claim. The once famous flourishing tea plantation has turned into dry shrubbery. More than 6 000 workers lost their jobs with the plantation's demise.
According to Maloa, the development and maintenance of the tea plantations is in the hands of the Makgobo tribe. "If they need help, they simply have to ask us for it."
The black tea being cultivated at Tshivase is known as Midi Tea and will be sold in three wrappings: Midi Gold Tea Bags, Midi Gold Tea Bags with Tags, en Midi Gold Tea Leaves. A rooibos variety will make its appearance on the shelves later this year.
