Davies: Africa's integration important

Johannesburg - South Africa's priority as Brics member is the integration of African countries and infrastructure development on the continent, Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies said on Sunday.

"We [South Africa] are a developing economy in our own right, but we are also part of the African continent.

"We came into Brics to promote South Africa and Africa's integration," Davies said at a post-Brics seminar in Johannesburg on Sunday.

The Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (Brics) summit was held in Durban in March.

Sunday's seminar was held to establish what South Africa achieved at the summit and its future plans for economic development.

The continent had a population of over 1.1 billion and an economy worth US2 trillion, said Davies.

"The continent has to move towards industrialisation."

He said South Africa became a Brics member at the right time and the country would focus on investment in the production sector.

"Our strategy is to further strengthen trade, investment and other economic linkages with the world's fastest growing and most dynamic economies," Davies said.
