Johannesburg - The Postbank must be positioned as a state bank that is duly licensed, ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe said on Monday.
"If it can have a proper licence... The state will have a very visible, big footprint in the financial sector," Mantashe said at a briefing on the outcomes of the ANC's national executive committee meeting last week.
There are currently around 24 000 Postbank branches across the country.
The meeting focused on the creation of jobs and how various sectors of the economy could contribute in decreasing unemployment.
The ANC also wanted the process of "operationalising" a state-owned mining company to get underway - which it saw as a "catalyst" to creating work.
In the financial sector, the ANC would pay attention to the transformation of the SA Reserve Bank and the debate on its shareholding.
