Johannesburg - The violence experienced in the mining sector cannot be allowed to continue, ANC treasurer general Zweli Mkhize said on Thursday.
"There is a difference between militancy and anarchy," Mkhize told National Union of Mineworkers' members in Pretoria.
"No negotiations are conducted through pangas and spears."
He said the NUM had been known for its maturity during negotiations.
The NUM's rival union, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu), had displayed "hatred and bitterness".
"We can't allow such hostility and public display of weapons," Mkhize said at the NUM's central committee meeting.
It could be seen as a bigger, economy-wide problem which could spread to other sectors.
He touched on issues within the mining sector and its role within the National Development Plan.
The mining industry would play an important role in delivering jobs, he said.
