Pretoria - More than 75 000 licences have been cancelled in the past five years, while more than 3 000 drivers have had their licences suspended, the transport department said on Thursday.
Between 2006 and 27 December 2011, 75 722 licences and professional driving permits (PrDPs) were cancelled and 3049 suspended, spokesperson Logan Maistry said in a statement.
This year alone 10 945 driving licences and PrDPs were cancelled and a further 607 suspended.
Gauteng accounted for the majority of cancellations (3 047) this year, followed by the Western Cape (2 815) and KwaZulu-Natal (1 497).
The majority of suspensions were in the Western Cape (166), followed by KwaZulu-Natal (159) and the Eastern Cape (140).
Since the start of the festive season, more than 1 434 motorists had been arrested across the country, including 501 for drunk driving, 420 for not having valid public transport permits and 104 for overloading.
During the same period, 544 379 vehicles and drivers were checked and 117 061 fines issued for various traffic offences. A total of 3 956 unroadworthy vehicles were impounded. Most of these were minibus taxis or buses.
