Johannesburg - South African Airways (SAA) has concluded an agreement for the sale of 89 000 air tickets for use during the 2010 World Cup soccer tournament.

The agreement was entered into with global soccer controlling body Fifa's agent, Match, which is in charge of ticket sales, accommodation, information services and hospitality packages.

In terms of the arrangement tickets will be valid for flights on SAA aircraft on the Golden Triangle routes between Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.

SAA, which was recently declared Africa's top airline at the World Travel Awards, is the first airline on the continent to conclude such an agreement with Match for the 2010 tournament.

The agreement means that SAA has already sold 89 000 tickets for next year, and the income is assured, explained airline spokesperson Vimla Maistry on Sunday.

Chris Smyth, SAA's acting chief executive, previously informed Sake24 that Match could put an additional 20 aircraft at SAA's disposal for use during the World Cup. These aircraft would come with their own pilots, he explained.
