Johannesburg – Fewer people received civil summonses relating to debt in April this year compared to April last year, according to Statistics SA (Stats SA).
In April this year 72 003 civil summonses were issued for debt. That is 3.2% fewer than in April last year.
The total number of civil summonses issued for debt decreased by 26.4% in the three months which ended in April this year compared to the similar period last year.
Categories like services and money lent were among those which have shown the biggest decrease in civil summonses issued during February, March and April this year, compared to the last year.
The total number of civil judgments recorded for debt in South Africa also declined.
In April this year 29 629 debtors had civil judgements against them. This was 1% less than in April last year.
The number of civil judgements for debt recorded during February, March and April this year declined by 27.5% compared to the same three month period in 2012.
The biggest declines were in the categories of money lent, services and goods sold.
However, the total value of civil judgements recorded for debt increased by 8.8% in the three months ending in April this year compared to the same period in 2012.
When only comparing April this year with April last year, the decline was 24.4%. In April this year the total value of civil judgements for debt was R388 million, of which R100.9m was for money lent and R94.9m for services.
