Bloemfontein - Olivier Meyer, the former French international rugby player and French heavyweight boxing champion, has been suspended as chief executive of the Wasteman Group.
This group is one of the country's biggest waste-management businesses. In December last year Wasteman was involved in a scandal when tons of medical waste was dumped for a fee in and around Welkom.
On Monday Wasteman’s board issued a statement to say that Granville Rex would take the reins as interim chief executive.
As chief executive and official representative of the company Meyer has already been charged by the Green Scorpions. He appeared in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court in April.
He is being charged, together with Free State businessman Gavin Brasher and five other accused, of illegally dumping waste, the illegal dumping of medical waste, corruption and transgressions of the Environmental Management Act.
The board has decided that it would be unwise for Olivier to remain in his position while the investigation is under way, says the Wasteman statement.
In 1986 and 1987 Meyer was the French heavyweight boxing champion and in 1993 and 1994 tighthead for the French national rugby team.
