Johannesburg - The National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) strike in the tyre sector has ended, the union said on Tuesday.
"Workers are ending the strike at tyre manufacturing companies, Apollo in Durban and Ladysmith, Continental, Goodyear and a conveyer belt producing company Veyance Technologies Africa (all in Port Elizabeth)," Numsa general secretary Irvin Jim said in a statement.
The strike at Bridgestone-Firestone, both in Brits and Port Elizabeth, was not ended. It was only temporarily suspended pending exploration of further avenues to monitor and decisively deal with that company, he said.
Workers were expected to resume work on Thursday.
They were demanding a 10% salary increase for the next three years.
"It is important to recognise the advances we have made in the 2010 negotiations with the New Tyre Manufacturing Industry Employers' Association to achieve our immediate objectives and enforce our momentary interests with regard to wage increases and improved working conditions," said Jim.
