SA airports shine at intl awards

Cape Town - Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) scooped five top places at the Skytrax 2016 World Airport Awards.

Cape Town International took the awards for Best Airport in Africa, Best Airport Staff in Africa and Best Airport for 5 to 10 million passengers. King Shaka International won Best Regional Airport in Africa and Best Airport for under 5 million passengers.

Acsa had three airports ranked among the world’s top 35 airports and Cape Town International moved up four places in the global ranking this year to 22.

In addition to Cape Town International’s win for Best Airport in Africa and Best Airport Staff in Africa, O.R. Tambo International and King Shaka International took second and third place respectively in both these categories.

King Shaka International was once again recognised as Best Regional Airport in Africa, building on the same success of last year. Additionally, East London, Port Elizabeth and Bloemfontein followed behind King Shaka International by securing the top positions in the same category.

The 2016 World Airports Awards, which took place in Cologne, Germany, are a measurement of customer satisfaction across airports globally. It is regarded as the benchmark for the aviation industry as it is voted on by customers in the largest, independent annual global airport customer satisfaction survey.

Results are based on 13.02 million customer nominations across 112 nationalities of air travellers, and included 550 airports worldwide. The survey evaluates customer satisfaction across 39 key performance indicators for airport service and product - from check-in, arrivals, transfers, shopping, security and immigration, through to departure at the gate.

Acsa’s CEO Bongani Maseko is delighted that SA’s airports have been recognised on the global stage at these prestigious awards.

"This is a proud moment for us and I hope all our customers who use our nine international and regional airports across the country will join us in celebrating these achievements. Once again, our ongoing commitment to building a world-leading airports business has been recognised," said Maseko.

"Our dedication to excellence is embodied across the provision of world-class facilities, systems and service. These accolades represent a culmination of our collective efforts and we will continue to enhance the experience we offer customers across all our airports.”
