Cape Town - The weaker rand will certainly bring more tourists, including from the UK, to South Africa, Jamie Cassidy, who is responsible for British Airways' commercial activity in Africa, said in an interview with Fin24.
"The weaker rand is a boon for UK tourists and will make South Africa even more attractive as a tourism destination," Cassidy said.
He was on a visit to Cape Town this week for a special fly-past of a British Airways A380 of Table Mountain. The reason for the flight was to celebrate the start of BA's use of the A380 on certain flights to South Africa.
He said BA planes on the Cape Town route have been full for the past two months.
"We also take lots of passengers from North America to South Africa," he said.
"There is fairly buoyant demand, especially in Africa and we consider the continent as an important growth market."
During his visit he met with members of the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Cape Town Tourism.
"We know that Cape Town Tourism is keen to have the city seen as a year round destination," said Cassidy.
For this reason BA has decided to increase its SA winter schedule by three flights a week as from May.
It has also invested in a new lounge at Cape Town International airport.
