Cape Town – Lufthansa pilots on Tuesday picked up the airline’s first Airbus A320 airplane equipped with extended wingtips, commonly called sharklets.
The 2.4 meter long wingtips make out part of an aircraft’s wing, and are are designed to cut fuel consumption by 1% to 4%.
The sharklets aim to reduce drag and also enable aircraft to climb faster, which has a positive effect in reducing noise emissions.
European aircraft manufacturer Airbus expects the resultant fuel saving to cut annual CO2 emissions per aircraft by about 1 000 tonnes.
This equates to the emissions volume generated by about 200 cars.
A total of 22 brand new A320 jets, all fitted with the Airbus blended-wing innovation, is scheduled for delivery to Lufthansa by early 2015 as replacements for older aircraft.
The Lufthansa Group has 239 different aircraft of the latest generation on its order list up to 2025, representing a commitment to fleet renewal worth about €23bn at aircraft list prices.
The airbus aircraft is a competitor to Boeing's 737.
