Fewer visitors to Robben Island

Cape Town - Cape Town continues to welcome scores of local and international visitors to the Mother City, with top tourist attractions and the Airports Company of South Africa (Acsa) recording an increase in the number of tourists for the summer season so far.

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway reported a record season, with 120 318 visitors in December – an increase of 2% when compared to December 2012 when 117 785 people summited Table Mountain, a New 7 Wonder of Nature.

Cape Point reported an increase of 4.25% in December 2013 and Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens noted an increase of 9.08%.

The only attraction to have reported a drop in visitor figures for December 2013 was Robben Island, which recorded a 5% drop compared to 2012.

Cape Town International Airport indicated an upturn in total arrivals compared to November and December 2012, with an increase of 2.07% for the month of December 2013 compared to the same period in 2012.

"With the City having just received the top spot on the prestigious New York Times’ list of 52 Places to visit in 2014, and being awarded the World Design Capital (WDC 2014) title, we expect more international and regional visitors this year," said said the City’s mayoral committee member for tourism, events and marketing, Grant Pascoe.

Research by Grant Thornton shows that the city’s tourism industry generated R14.6bn in 2012 and employs around 34 500 permanent and 15 000 temporary workers.

The City of Cape Town’s festive season events also contributed to the steady stream of visitors into the city.

This year, for the first time, the City hosted a New Year’s Eve celebration at the Grand Parade, which included a traditional Malay Choirs parade after midnight.

The event was attended by some 80 000 revellers,’ said Pascoe.

Cape Town Tourism also reported a busy summer season so far, with hotels, restaurants and tourism services experiencing an increase in visitor numbers of at least one percentage point year-on-year.

"Looking at the performance indicators for November and December 2013, our initial forecast of an increase in tourism numbers during the summer season has been confirmed," said Cape Town Tourism CEO, Enver Duminy.

"Whilst accommodation statistics were still outstanding for January 2014, growth of 5.2% was experienced by accommodation establishments in November and 2.6% in December 2013."

Many tourism businesses have indicated that there has been a definite increase compared to December 2012.

A number of hotel operators have noticed a spike in visitors from the US this season, and there was increase in domestic visitors who chose to spend their holiday in South Africa as opposed to going overseas, said Duminy.
